“Between stimulus and response there is space.”

Taking another group through Part 1 of the Total Focus Workshop today. It’s always my pleasure to experience the material over and over again. Today I taught about Viktor Frankl and his studies on human behaviour based on his own experiences during the Holocaust.

Frankl saw our ability to respond to life and to be responsible to life as a major factor in finding meaning and therefore, fulfilment in life. He believed that humans were not simply the product of heredity and environment but rather had the ability to make decisions and take responsibility for their own lives. He felt that education must be towards the ability to make decisions, take responsibility and then become free to be the person you decide to be.

In his words:
“Between stimulus and response there is space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
